The Structure of Marriage According to the Scriptures
Introduction
Marriage is a covenant established by the Most High and designed to reflect divine order within the family. Whether a household consists of one wife or multiple wives, the Scriptures consistently emphasize righteousness, responsibility, transparency, love, and obedience to God.
The biblical model is not built upon domination or selfish authority, but upon order. The husband is accountable to the Messiah, the wife is called to support and respect her husband, and both are commanded to walk in wisdom, mercy, and faithfulness.
A successful marriage begins when all parties understand their roles before God.
The Divine Order of the Household
The Scriptures establish a chain of authority within the family.
1 Corinthians 11:3
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."
This order teaches that a husband is not an independent ruler. He is under authority himself and must answer to the Messiah for how he governs his household.
The husband is therefore expected to lead according to righteousness rather than personal desires.
The Husband Must Submit to the Messiah
Before a man can properly lead a family, he must first submit himself to God.
John 14:15
"If ye love me, keep my commandments."
1 John 2:4
"He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar."
A husband who refuses correction, rejects God's commandments, or governs his family according to his own lusts is not following the biblical pattern.
The authority given to a husband is not absolute; it exists under the authority of God and the Messiah.
The Wife Is Called to Respect and Support Her Husband
The Scriptures instruct wives to honor the order established by God.
Ephesians 5:22-24
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord."
Submission does not mean slavery or abuse. Rather, it means recognizing the leadership role God has assigned within the household.
Likewise, the Apostle Peter wrote:
1 Peter 3:1
"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands."
A godly wife contributes to the peace, stability, and success of the family through wisdom, respect, and faithfulness.
The Husband Must Love His Wife
The command for wives to submit is balanced by an equally important command to husbands.
Ephesians 5:25
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."
The Messiah sacrificed Himself for His people.
Likewise, a husband must place the well-being of his wife above selfish interests.
Biblical leadership is demonstrated through service, sacrifice, and protection.
Husbands Must Dwell With Their Wives According to Knowledge
The Scriptures instruct men to understand and care for their wives.
1 Peter 3:7
"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife..."
A husband should know his wife's strengths, weaknesses, concerns, and needs.
He should communicate honestly, exercise patience, and seek understanding rather than acting harshly or impulsively.
Knowledge within marriage requires listening, wisdom, and compassion.
Marriage Requires Agreement
Throughout Scripture, marriage is presented as a covenant relationship.
Amos 3:3
"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"
A marriage cannot function properly where deception, manipulation, or hidden intentions exist.
Agreement does not mean that husband and wife will never disagree. Rather, it means they share a common commitment to serve God and preserve the covenant.
Open communication and honesty strengthen the foundation of the household.
Transparency in Taking Another Wife
In households where a man chooses to take another wife, the Scriptures place additional responsibilities upon him.
The Law specifically commands that the first wife's rights must not be diminished.
Exodus 21:10
"If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish."
A husband who seeks to expand his household must act with wisdom, fairness, and integrity.
Secret relationships, deception, and neglect violate the principles of righteousness.
Because marriage is a covenant affecting the entire household, transparency and honesty are essential.
A husband must ensure that all wives receive proper care, provision, respect, and attention.
Avoiding Partiality
The Scriptures warn against favoritism among wives and children.
Deuteronomy 21:15-17
The Law prohibited a man from denying inheritance rights to one wife's son simply because he preferred another wife.
God's standard requires justice within the household.
Favoritism creates bitterness, division, and conflict.
Wisdom From the Apocrypha
The Apocrypha contains valuable instruction regarding family life and marriage.
Sirach 26:1
"Blessed is the man that hath a virtuous wife, for the number of his days shall be doubled."
A righteous wife is presented as a blessing from God.
Sirach 25:1
"In three things I was beautified, and stood up beautiful both before God and men: the unity of brethren, the love of neighbours, a man and a wife that agree together."
Agreement between husband and wife is praised as a beautiful thing before God.
Sirach 36:24
"He that getteth a wife beginneth a possession, a help like unto himself, and a pillar of rest."
Marriage is intended to bring support, stability, and peace.
The Goal of Marriage
Marriage is not merely about companionship or physical attraction.
It is a covenant designed to produce:
Righteous children.
Stability within the family.
Mutual support.
Spiritual growth.
Service to God.
Malachi 2:15
"And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed."
The family serves as the primary institution through which faith, wisdom, and righteousness are transmitted to future generations.
Conclusion
The Scriptures establish a clear order within marriage. The husband submits to the Messiah. The wife respects and supports her husband. The husband loves, protects, and honors his wife. Both husband and wife are called to walk together in agreement, honesty, and faithfulness.
Where multiple wives exist, the husband bears an even greater responsibility to exercise justice, transparency, provision, and wisdom. He must never diminish the rights of one wife for the sake of another.
Whether in a monogamous or polygynous household, the biblical pattern remains the same: submission to God, love within the family, honesty among all parties, and faithful obedience to the commandments. When these principles are followed, marriage becomes a source of peace, strength, and blessing according to the will of the Most High.
